I’ve been seeing some great Halloween Charcuterie ideas floating around the internet lately. I LOVE charcuterie. Mostly because it is so versatile and you can get creative with it. So, what exactly is this trending phenomenon? And how did charcuterie get it’s start?

Charcuterie is just a fancy word for cured meat. The word derives from French origins in the 15th century, when people used every last bit of the meat and left nothing to waste. The meat was then put through a preservation process of curing and often formed into some sort of sausage or dry-aged meat. Remember, this was before refrigeration, so salt, vinegar, and smoke were essential in the meat preservation process. The term predominately refers to pork, but can refer to other types of cured meats as well.

The term charcuterie comes from two French words: “chair” which means “flesh,” and “cuit” which means “cooked.” While you may travel around Europe and find charcuterie-type shops serving cured meats and accompaniments, the trend and appreciation hadn’t really taken off in the United States until more recently.

Here are some of the great Halloween Charcuterie ideas I’ve seen.

1. Orange Pumpkin Charcuterie Board

This board is very color coordinated. I like the pale oranges and whites. It was also creative to mix savory with sweet.

2. Skeleton Charcuterie Board

It's not Halloween without skeletons. I like the colors on this board too with the blackish fruits and more of the pale colored cheeses and nuts.

3. Dia de Los Muertos Charcuterie Platter

This board is so amazing! Easy brie cheese skull with salami roses and marigolds. And the skeleton ribs are made with cheese triangles.

4. BOO-tiful Halloween Charcuterie Board

I mean.....how gorgeous is this board! Just throw on a couple of white pumpkins, a few spiders and some hand bones.

5. Sweet Treat Charcuterie Board

The colors on this board are so vibrant. Who doesn't love halloween candy!?
